Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

What would you do if hundreds of people from your world suddenly developed magical superpowers, all on the same day? Or if one of these superpower-wielders decided to overtake Chicago and turn it into steel, and then kill your father? For David, the main protagonist of Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson, he wants revenge.

Steelheart is the first book in the Reckoners trilogy. These superpower-wielders are coined Epics, and they have many differences. Each of their superpowers is completely unique, and some Epics have multiple powers. Also, every time that an Epic uses their powers they become more corrupted, turning towards violence and evil. However, all Epics have one commonality; they all have an individual weakness, which if triggered, negates all of their powers and weakens them.

A mysterious group known only as the Reckoners travels throughout the broken world, eliminating and exposing the tyrannical Epics. David, our protagonist, wishes to join these groups in their effort to rehabilitate the world. David lives in Chicago, where an Epic known as Steelheart rules. Steelheart's powers include invincibility, flight, and the ability to turn non-living objects into steel. Steelheart has transformed all of Chicago into steel, permanently preserving all material object. Before his reign of Chicago, he had gone on a mass killing spree, murdering David's father in the process, creating the cause for David's hate.

After the Reckoners arrive in Chicago, David believes he finally has his shot to fulfill his dreams. David is able to acquire a meeting with the Reckoners, however the Reckoners have other plans for Chicago. There are not very many characters in this book however all of them are very well written, all feeling like each of them are a real person, rather than a created personality.

Overall, I would say that this is an exceptional young adult fiction book. The world is very well developed, with thoroughly written characters and an intriguing storyline. The uniqueness of the Epics combined with the exceptional writing of Brandon Sanderson creates some very enjoyable events that you wouldn't ever expect! My only complaint about this book is that many of the concepts are a little too simple, but other than that I would highly suggest this book for anyone looking to read any young adult dystopian fantasy novels!

  2. This is a great post! I really like your first paragraph. Your intro of a question really drew me into the rest of the blog. The conflict between the epics and reckoners seems very intense, and I would love to read this book!

  3. Steelheart sounds like a pretty good book! I find it interesting that in this story life is more or less normal and then it suddenly becomes more dystopian, whereas other novels I've read are either realistic fiction all the way or begin as very science fiction-like in their setting and characters. The diversity of superpowers sounds cool, and overall you made the book seem pretty interesting Thanks for the review
